I Got A Girl Crush….
If you haven’t heard yet, I recorded a piano cover of one of my favorite songs. You can check it out by clicking here!
I wanted to talk a little bit about this Little Big Town hit because it has really been an incredibly influential song in my life and artistry. Honestly, for some reason I vividly remember the first time I heard this song. It was my senior year and I was in my truck alone at a red light at the intersection of Ken Caryl and Wadsworth. It came on the radio and I was completely moved. At this point, I wouldn’t have known its name so I am sure I was “Shazaming” that shit. Lol.
Anyways, after that I listened to it probably 100 times with the following days because I AM THAT PERSON… THE PERSON WHO RUINS SONGS BECAUSE I CONTINUOUSLY PLAY THEM UNTIL MY FRIENDS WANT TO MURDER BOTH THE SONG AND ME. But hey! Whatever, a good song is a good song.
After falling in love with this song, I decided to do a cover of it with Tony Antonio. Antonio was actually a security guard at my high school Columbine. After finding out he had a studio, I went and recorded some covers with him. My rendition was definitely far from perfect, but it actually was the song that really solidified my country lane. I had always known that Country was my favorite, but because Colorado had limited opportunities, I had dedicated a lot of my time to singing Opera, Pop, Musical Theater and more. “Girl Crush” is the song that cut out my confusion about who I was as a musician. This is what I was and wanted to be. Before, people often tried to sway me away from country because “I am not from the South”. But people really liked it and most importantly I fell in love with it and was inspired even more to make my move to Nashville. I have since removed the cover from my YouTube Chanel but my original Girl Crush cover will always be an important song to me and has literally changed the trajectory of my life.
I recorded a little cover of it on my phone this weekend while my pianist Brett Sandler were playing songs. You can listen to it by clicking here.
I think its really important to always continue to find new inspiration, but sometimes its fun to look back at the things that inspired you in the past. “Girl Crush” will always be a classic to me.
